Burgoo (food for comfort) -- Vancouver
The first time I had dinner at Burgoo, I was pregnant with EH. I was not very happy that night coz it was really late when we headed out for dinner. It took forever to decide where and what to eat… you know it’s a pregnant woman thing. You should always “feed” a pregnant woman before 7pm so she gets enough time to digest and rest by 10pm. And when OH told me where we were heading to, I was like.. what?! Why? We live in Richmond, and can we just stay in Richmond? Why we had to go all the way to Vancouver for dinner?
Because the best thing you ever ate is always… ALWAYS comfort food. Mac & Cheese, fried chicken, fries, something oily and starchy, and the best comfort food are served here… Burgoo – food for comfort.
Today, we came back here with our 5-month-old son, EH. It feels weird to sit on a busy Main street with trucks and cars zoom zoom on the street, and we sat on the deck listening to light music. It’s a Wednesday afternoon, and the restaurant was packed during lunch hour.
They have a regular menu plus a feature menu which changes seasonally, and currently they are featuring a spring menu. I ordered an Irish Stew (16). It’s a Guinness braised lamb with vegetables and homemade dumplings, served over garlic mash potatoes. OH ordered a Chicken Dijonnaise (16) with mushrooms, pearl onions, potatoes and green peas in a creamy Dijon veloute served over vol au vent. EH ordered half a bowl of thick consistency rice cereal and 6 oz of warm soy formula served in his personnel BornFree bottle. (Sorry, those are not on the menu)
The lamb in my Irish stew was very tender. It tasted a little bit gamy, but not too strong. I have this love and hate relationship with the gamy taste of lamb. I love it, but I can’t stand it when it gets too strong. Burgoo used a variety of spices to tone down the gaminess of lamb, and they did a good job on that. A spoonful of lamb and a spoonful of creamy garlic mashed = one big grin on my face. I had a few bites of OH’s dish, juicy chicken and chunks of potatoes with a hint of Dijon mustard. I like they make the sauce really light, you can taste the Dijon mustard, but not overwhelming.
Burgoo has three locations: West 10th, Lonsdale, and Main Street. I have only been to the Main location. The main location doesn’t have a parking lot, but there are plenty of 1-hour parking right in front of the restaurant, and also some 2 hours parking south-bound of Main.
